CHALLENGER ATR - FEATURE SHOE

November 06, 2015

This is the second in a series of shoe profiles, in which we call-out a particular HOKA ONE ONE model deserving of a closer look.

Today we put the spotlight on the HOKA ONE ONE CHALLENGER ATR - Winner of the Competitor Magazine Trail Shoe of the Year 2015

The HOKA ONE ONE CHALLENGER ATR integrates the best design elements of the Clifton into an all-terrain trail shoe. It is light, responsive, smooth, and perfect for everything from casual training to long racing. The toebox fits generously and the outsole grip is ideal for the vast majority of challenging trail terrain, while the cushioning means a comfortable and quick ride even on road.

Are they for you?

UPPER
The upper of the HOKA ONE ONE CHALLENGER ATR employs the same lightweight material as the CLIFTON and will provide some give and stretch over time. Welded overlays provide a decent amount of structure throughout the upper, covering a fairly beefy mesh. HOKA uses a rubberized toe cap which provides a decent amount of protection, and a very thin tongue that stays in place and provides just enough comfort over the top of the foot. The upper material is thin and breathable but durable enough to take a good pounding while also keeping your foot protected. They also drain very well.

MIDSOLE/OUTSOLE
With 33 millimeters of stack height, the CHALLENGER ATR appears to be very much a traditional HOKA shoe, however, at 243 grams (Men's model) they feel nimble and responsive. As with most HOKA shoes, the foot sits down in the EVA midsole alleviating the fears of rolled ankles or instability. The EVA foam is a durable material that is firm enough to maintain some structure whilst still providing a smooth and cushioned ride.  It also does a fantastic job of absorbing all of the little tiny rocks you step on when trail running, allowing you to glide smoothly over sections of terrain in a way that you may not have been able to do before. It does all of this whilst maintaining the responsiveness that the trails demand. The CHALLENGER ATR also has a high quality rubber outsole, which at its very centre is made up of exposed EVA. The surrounding area consists of hard rubber material with an aggressive 4mm lugging pattern which offers outstanding grip in every condition.

My journey with T1D has been hugely transformational in a very positive way so far. Hence I have decided to really test my capabilities as an athlete and T1 Diabetic while fundraising for the organisation who helps others like me. I have chosen to compete in the Tarawera 102km Ultramarathon as a way of testing my body to its absolute limit, physically, mentally and ‘diabetically’.
