WILD THING'S FOUNDER, MAL LAW, IS WILD ABOUT THE TORRENT

We recently had a chat to Mal Law, founder of Wild Things, about his favourite shoe:

I first discovered the Torrent when I arrived in Colorado a couple of years back and discovered I’d left my beloved Mafates' at home. I took a trip to REI who had this new lower-profile HOKA that I’d never heard of, but which looked pretty darned good. I tried a pair on and they fitted like a glove (well, actually like a really comfortable shoe). A couple of short runs later on some fairly hilly, technical trail and I was in love. But still, I was taking a big risk when I committed to wearing these on a 5-day fastpack around the Hardrock 100 course later that same week. But I needn’t have feared, the Torrents remained comfortable throughout and were just brilliant on all the varieties of trail (and scree!) that we encountered. They are now my go-to shoe for all-mountain missions, including the Bob Graham Round in the UK last year (photo taken a couple of days before on our last training run - James Harcombe is also a Torrent fan!) and anything that doesn’t involve long distances on hard-packed trail.

The main things I love about the shoe are:

  • they fit my foot perfectly!
  • they are light and responsive
  • they’re the perfect profile - just that little bit of extra padding but still low enough to the ground that I feel secure even on the roughest, rockiest terrain
  • they are super-grippy

For me they are the perfect mountain shoe that I wear whenever I know I’m going to be encountering rough terrain or venturing off-trail. I won’t hit the mountain tops wearing anything else (on my feet!) if I can help it.

I’ve always believed that when leading a movement, you might just need to step out into the grey, with confidence, in order to inspire others. People are most likely to change their actions when they see others modelling the behaviours they are being asked to adopt; if I’m not up for doing something, then why should I expect others to be? This is the way I am approaching my new role as Executive Director of New Zealand’s national Te Araroa trail.

I am sure there are many people like me that require a goal, a challenge, something they work towards. We don’t need to let things out of our control change this! We just need to RESET. Nic Gill, AB"s strength & conditioning Coach, and HOKA ambassador, gives us his advice on how to keep going when your training and race plans are changed.

THE BENEFITS OF CROSS TRAINING WITH LATOYA SHAUNTAY SNELL

There’s tons of fitness articles and podcasts on the market explaining the benefits of cross-training; I am definitely one of those people that sing a variation of praises about it too. My name is Latoya Shauntay Snell — a multisport athlete, content creator and founder of food and fitness blog Running Fat Chef. I have been a Global Athlete Ambassador for HOKA since 2019. Since 2014 I’ve completed close to 200 running and obstacle course racing events, including 5 ultramarathons and around 25 marathons. An immense amount of credit goes towards incorporating cross training into my regimen.
